A Balance Worn

Where others see waste, we craft legacy.

Almanac Australia reclaims invasive fox fur from necessary conservation work. Each piece is a considered response to a devastating imbalance; a timeless, handcrafted garment of conscious luxury.

This is not a revival of the fur trade. It is a new story of ethical, purpose-driven design.

The Australian Reality

The true cost of the invasive European Red Fox is measured in what our country has lost forever. This single species is a primary cause for the extinction of at least 13 native mammals, creatures like the Lesser Bilby and the Desert Bettong, now just ghosts in our ecosystem. The threat continues today, with the fox endangering the survival of more than 75 other native species.

These animals were part of a cultural and ecological fabric woven over millennia. Their vulnerability to introduced predators was compounded by the disruption of traditional Indigenous land management, including sophisticated fire regimes that once shaped and protected their habitats.

Beyond this devastating ecological toll, the fox also inflicts a significant economic wound, costing our agricultural industry an estimated $227 million every year.

This is the stark reality of modern conservation in Australia. Reducing their numbers is not a choice, but a necessity for the survival of our endemic wildlife.

Our work is grounded in a clear and tangible purpose: to create beauty from a destructive imbalance. We are guided by a strict set of values.

We exclusively use wild, invasive Australian fox fur, a direct byproduct of necessary conservation work that protects our vulnerable native wildlife. Our actions directly support these on-the-ground efforts, providing the resources and incentive for landholders and conservationists to carry out this vital task. We believe in honouring this material by intercepting waste and transforming it through timeless, hands-on craft. In a world of disposable fashion, our work provides a considered alternative: a commitment to creating conscious, enduring, and purposeful pieces. This commitment means our production will always be limited by the number of ethically available pelts, dictated by the needs of the Australian landscape, not the demands of the market.

Let us be clear: this is not a revival of the old fur trade. Almanac Australia is unequivocally against fur farming and the hunting of animals for fur within their native ecosystems. Our work is not 'pro-fur'; it is a pragmatic and considered response to a uniquely Australian ecological crisis.

Should a day ever come when the fox is no longer a threat to Australia's native wildlife, our purpose would be fulfilled, and we would celebrate proudly by closing our doors.
